A forensic economist testified in a Texas court on Friday that the far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and the parent corporation that runs his Infowars website have a combined net value of up to $270 million.
Between $135 million and $270 million is the estimated overall net worth of Jones and his media company Free Speech Systems, according to forensic economist Bernard Pettingill, who testified against Jones in the Sandy Hook defamation case last week.
In comparing Jones to Mongolian warrior Genghis Khan from the 13th century, Pettingill remarked, “As much of a maverick as he is, as much of an outcast that he is, he is a tremendously successful man.
Jones’ personal net worth was likewise estimated by the forensic economist to be between $70 million and $140 million.
Pettingtill told the court, “You can’t separate Alex Jones from the corporation; he is the company.
Pettingill told the court that Jones is a “revolutionary,” adding that he “didn’t ride a wave, he generated the wave.”
Jones “promulgated some hate speech and some falsehoods, but he made a lot of money and he monetized that,” Pettingill stated in testimony.
Both a court in Connecticut and one in Texas held Jone to be liable for defamation by default for making false claims that the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 was a “hoax.”
The parents of 6-year-old Jesse Lewis, one of the 26 people slain in the Newtown, Connecticut, tragedy, Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, have filed a defamation lawsuit against Infowars founder Alex Jones and Free Speech Systems for their misleading statements regarding the shooting.
Heslin and Lewis received more than $4 million in compensatory damages on Thursday; as a result, Jones now risks extra severe sanctions for his persistent lying.
Pettingill testified in court that he tracked Jones’ assets and discovered that from September 2015 to December 2018, Jones earned $165 million. Pettingill was paid by the plaintiffs to testify about Jones’ net worth.
In reference to earlier testimony in the case from Jones, who claimed to the court that Infowars made $70 million in revenue last year, Pettingill remarked, “It averages to $53.2 million-a-year, but that is the beginning point.”
In his testimony, Pettingill stated that he had discovered that Jones had taken $61.9 million out of Free Speech Systems in 2021, the year the default judgments against Jones were handed out.
According to Pettingill, “That amount represents a value, a value of Alex Jones’ net worth.”
Pettingill claimed that over the course of three years, from 2015 to 2018, Jones withdrew an additional $18 million from Free Speech Systems.
